The Rise and Swagger of Artificial Intelligence

The recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have sparked discussions among both experts and laypeople. Headlines are frequently dominated by software generating images and videos and text-based tools, particularly OpenAI's ChatGPT. In this article, I will briefly delve into the history, present, and future of AI, as well as the opportunities and threats it poses.

In this article, I will briefly delve into the history, present, and future of AI, as well as the opportunities and threats it poses.

The History of AI

The history of artificial intelligence (AI) can be said to have officially begun during World War II, but the concept has existed for thousands of years. Ancient tales mention artificial intelligence, and many significant literary works touch on the subject. Perhaps the most famous is Mary Shelley’s horror classic, "Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus," where Dr. Frankenstein creates an artificial entity—a monster—that eventually develops self-awareness and consciousness.

As a field of study, AI research emerged in the early 1950s at Dartmouth College, particularly based on Alan Turing's computational theories, which played a significant role in the 1940s' wars. Initially, AIs were simple, limited systems, but now, machine learning and complex algorithms have made AI a part of our everyday lives. AI is already an indispensable component of phones, computers, and other gadgets. In practice, almost all software, from helper tools like Siri or Google Assistant to translation tools and even the filtering systems in our email inboxes.

The influence of AI reaches much further than just everyday technology. Businesses and industrial sectors are increasingly relying on AI to boost their productivity. Meanwhile, government agencies use AI for everything from simple paperwork processing to widespread surveillance, which puts even the extreme dystopian tales of the 1980s to shame.

AI is revolutionizing how tasks are performed, enhancing efficiency and minimizing human mistakes. Take healthcare, for instance: AI systems are now able to identify illnesses with impressive precision, occasionally surpassing the diagnostic skills of human doctors.

Has AI Achieved Consciousness?

There's widespread speculation that AI might be reaching consciousness, potentially leading to a so-called technological singularity. However, defining consciousness is a broad philosophical question, and I, Kasperi Heikkilä, am no Descartes or Locke. But based standard dictionary interpretations, my analysis suggests that AI achieving this state is, for the foreseeable future, unlikely.

Current AI programs, while skilled at imitating human interactions, don't truly possess consciousness. They are based on complex mathematical models, far from genuinely replicating human brain activity. This distinction points to an important philosophical debate about what consciousness really is, and emphasizes that AI, no matter how advanced, still lacks the subjective, experiential qualities central to human consciousness.

While I don't rule out the eventual development of synthetic consciousness, predicting when or how it might affect humanity is beyond my scope. Presently, AI remains a sophisticated tool, highly advanced yet fundamentally different from sentient beings.

The Potential of AI

AI's current applications transform everyday norms, from enhancing smartphone cameras to sorting emails. Its role is poised to grow, not only in daily life but across professional domains, and I view this evolution positively. AI's capacity to process vast data sets is invaluable, with significant implications for fields like medicine and environmental science. AI's potential is underscored COVID-19 vaccine at an accelerated pace and, significantly, by its ability to outperform human physicians in detecting cancer.

Within the realm of healthcare, the potential of artificial intelligence shines with particular luminosity. Sophisticated machine learning algorithms promise to revolutionize diagnostics, enabling more rapid and individualized treatment strategies. This technological advancement comes at a crucial time, as healthcare systems, particularly in Western nations, grapple with escalating demands due to unfavorable dependency ratios. Moreover, the automation capabilities of AI present an opportunity to bridge healthcare disparities, extending quality medical services to traditionally underserved areas.

Attempting to catalog the full spectrum of benefits AI might offer is a formidable endeavor. Its role in propelling scientific discovery and innovation is unequivocal. However, it is paramount to remember that the efficacy and ethical application of AI hinge fundamentally on the intent and wisdom of its human operators.

Will AI replace creative work?

Will AI take over creative roles? Reflecting on childhood, I recall my distaste for mathematics in school. Not because it was overly difficult, but it felt unexciting and somewhat unnecessary. Why burden myself with learning complex equations when a calculator, conveniently nestled in my backpack, could handle these calculations effortlessly?

Yet, despite the efficiency of calculators, mathematics still holds a crucial place in our educational systems and daily lives. This endurance stems from a simple truth: while machines can execute calculations, they cannot conceptualize or create mathematical theories. In essence, we still rely on humans to not only use these calculators but also to understand and advance mathematical thought.

This analogy extends to the realm of creativity. AI may change the creative field, but change and innovation are constant companions of artistic evolution. Imagine if Van Gogh had abandoned his bold, expressive brushstrokes for something more conventional, l, or if Shakespeare had confined himself to writing straightforward historical accounts.

It's also valid to raise concerns about AI infringing on the intellectual property of artists or creating ethical dilemmas through potential acts of digital replication or "artificial" creation. Nevertheless, these issues of ownership and originality are not novel but rather entrenched challenges within the realms of art and creativity, with the root of these issues extending beyond AI itself.

Is AI an existential threat to humanity?

Notable figures such as the late physicist Stephen Hawking Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk have warned that artificial intelligence could pose an existential threat to human existence, a belief shared by nearly half of all IT experts. While such fears are understandable, they are not entirely justified—at least not in the present or near future. Currently, there are more immediate threats to humanity's existence than a potential machine uprising.

I regard the existential threat posed by AI with a degree of skepticism for two reasons. First, our capability to replicate the functioning of the human brain is still in its infancy; thus, the prospect of true artificial general intelligence remains distant. Secondly, even if humanity were to create a supremely intelligent deus ex machinasuch an entity would still be constrained by the realities of the physical world. Intelligence alone does not equate to omnipotence. Even if your pocket calculator understood the entire universe and decided to use that knowledge to destroy you, it remains just a calculator. These logistical challenges apply to AI as well.

It's also worth noting that while computers outperform humans in certain specific environments, the combined capabilities of humans leveraging these machines still surpass the performance of computers alone.

Problems posed by AI

Like any tool, AI software can be misused. The ability of machines to mimic human communication poses a credible threat in spreading disinformation and committing fraud.

Another worrisome trend is the rise of so-called deepfake videos, where a person's face is superimposed onto someone else's body. Although deepfake technology has legitimate applications like in film industries, fabrication of deceptive or unauthorized adult content, posing profound implications for personal privacy and consent.

Mimicry isn't limited to appearances – even a person's voice can be falsified. In the future, discerning what's real will become increasingly challenging.

Consequently, it’s clear that the development of AI must be considered in both education and legislation. However, governments themselves are not entirely blameless when it comes to questionable uses of AI. Many have incorporated machine learning into their mass surveillance strategies, posing a significant threat to the privacy of ordinary citizens.

Beyond Good and Evil

According to Greek mythology, Prometheus , the titan, defied the gods to bestow upon mankind the gift of fire, enduring eternal punishment as a consequence. This myth resonates strongly with our contemporary engagement with artificial intelligence. Much like the primordial fire that reshaped human destiny, ushering in a new era of technological marvels, AI stands at the cusp of catalyzing a similar transformation. Its capabilities extend from untangling the knottiest of problems to refining processes and spawning innovations that could profoundly elevate the human condition. Yet, there's a caveat: neglecting the perils tethered to AI could unleash consequences of a magnitude we are yet to fully comprehend.

Ascribing labels such as 'good' or 'evil' to AI at this juncture is reductive and, perhaps, premature. The full scope of AI's impact on the tapestry of human existence, a narrative rich with possibilities and cautions, is a tale that might remain beyond the purview of our generation, unraveling slowly in the fullness of time.
