Shopify and WooCommerce make up the two most popular e-commerce platforms in Finland in 2026, covering about 80% of the market. Choosing between them is one of the most important decisions you'll make and the impact lasts for years. This guide is based on Visio Design's experience across dozens of builds on both platforms — from a practical, not a technical, angle.

Shopify in a nutshell

Shopify is a Canadian SaaS platform that offers everything you need to run a store from a single vendor: domain, hosting, checkout, payments, order management, inventory. You pay monthly — Basic €27/mo, Shopify €73/mo, Advanced €277/mo, Plus from €2,300/mo. Strength: best-in-class checkout (highest conversion in the industry), fast setup, automatic updates, strong theme and app ecosystem.

WooCommerce in a nutshell

WooCommerce is an open-source e-commerce plugin for WordPress. The licence is free, but you need hosting, an SSL certificate, paid plugins and update management. Strength: full data ownership, unlimited customisation, no platform fees, deep integration with the WordPress ecosystem (Yoast SEO, blog, memberships). Weakness: updates, backups and security are the owner's responsibility.

Payment processors in Finland — a critical difference

Finnish e-commerce buyer behaviour requires OP, Nordea, Danske, S-Pankki, Aktia, Säästöpankki, Handelsbanken, POP Pankki online banking options and MobilePay. Paytrail bundles these into one contract. On WooCommerce, Paytrail is an official plugin that works seamlessly. On Shopify, Paytrail requires a plugin and there are some checkout limitations (it's not fully native to Shopify Checkout). The implication: if you want the best conversion for Finnish buyers, WooCommerce + Paytrail is, in practice, the better combination.

Who is Shopify the right fit for?

  • Your catalogue is standard (apparel, jewellery, lifestyle), no complex variants or B2B processes
  • Goals include going international and multi-currency selling
  • The team has no technical resource and doesn't want servers
  • Time-to-launch is tight — Shopify can be live in 1 – 2 weeks
  • Revenue is under €200K/yr (transaction fees haven't yet eaten margin)

Who is WooCommerce the right fit for?

  • You want full data ownership and control
  • You need custom product configurators, B2B pricing, rental or memberships
  • You already have an active blog or content strategy (WordPress + WooCommerce integrate seamlessly)
  • Revenue is over €200K/yr — transaction-fee savings cover development cost
  • You want a checkout optimised for Finnish payment methods (Paytrail's official plugin)

Visio Design's recommendation

For a starting Finnish online store with under 50 products and a standard catalogue, we recommend Shopify — fast setup and a small monthly budget. For a growing Finnish brand with an active blog, B2B customers or revenue over €200K, we recommend WooCommerce + Paytrail. We build both, and the decision is always made together with the client during discovery — we don't sell a platform before scoping.
